It’s never too early to start planning your next vacation. Whether you’re looking for a place to bring the whole family, or set out on a solo adventure, Northern Arizona is the perfect setting for a glorious getaway. If you’ve never experienced Northern Arizona before, it’s not what you’d expect. The climate is vastly different from its Southern counterpart, averaging at least 30 degrees cooler than the high in Phoenix. Although you will likely run into snow, that’s no reason to hide inside. In fact, most Northern Arizonans spend their fall and winters outside.

Cabin vacations can be a lot of fun – especially if you plan your activities in advance. Whether you have little ones, teenagers or adult children, there’s something for all ages to enjoy in Mormon Lake and nearby Flagstaff.

If you thought the Grand Canyon was Arizona’s only amazing geological feature, think again. From extinct volcanos to meteor impact craters, sandstone cliffs and underground caverns, the 48^th state is filled with photo-worthy wonders that don’t necessarily make the record books.

Arizona is home to a fantastic array of scenic vistas, from cacti-covered desert to pine forests, mountains and, of course, the Grand Canyon. What many travelers don’t know is that the 48^th state is also a land of volcanoes.

The Arboretum at Flagstaff isn’t as old as some of the Southwest’s other public gardens, but it is one of the most diverse. The “arb” began as a private residence – a 200-acre parcel with a log cabin given to Californian Frances McAllister in the 1930s. McAllister eventually made the forests near Flagstaff her permanent home, settling here in the 1960s and building a Walter Reichardt designed home on her land.

Mormon Lake is one of the most pristine and picturesque hiking areas in the Coconino National Forest, with around 13 miles of linked hiking trails plus numerous meadows and ponds. Tall evergreens provide shade on warmer summer days, while fall and winter hikes at 7,000+ feet test your endurance.

If your idea of an Arizona summer is blistering triple digit temperatures, you're not alone. But there's more to Arizona than impressive cacti and desert heat. At Mormon Lake Lodge, we enjoy a cooler, greener side of Arizona that many folks simply don’t know about. One of our favorite hidden treasures, the Arizona Snowbowl, is located just north of Mormon Lake Lodge in Flagstaff. Although its nearly 800 skiable acres attract visitors in the winter, the Snowbowl also offers a wide array of family friendly fun in the summer.

Northern Arizona is more than just hiking trails and the Grand Canyon. From Flagstaff to Sedona to smaller towns dotting historic Route 66, the area’s rich culture can be found in its museums, galleries, and art festivals. Inspired by our lush pine forests and unique desert vistas, numerous artists – including famed surrealist painter Max Ernst – have called Northern Arizona home. 

Flagstaff has always been a popular summer destination for Southern Arizona residents looking to get out of the desert heat. In recent years, the area has seen a boom in tourists from across the country. Earlier this year, Governor Doug Ducey and Arizona Office of Tourism Director Debbie Johnson announced that statewide tourism was up last year, with hotels and lodges seeing the greatest increase in revenue.

Located just 40 minutes south of Flagstaff in the heart of the Coconino National Forest, Mormon Lake Lodge and Cabins has been welcoming travelers for more than 100 years. The Coconino National Forest is one of the state’s largest and most diverse parks, with 1.856 million acres encompassing Flagstaff’s towering evergreens, Oak Creek’s winding streams and the famous red rock buttes of Sedona. The area is home to four major lakes accessible from the Lake Mary Road exit on I-17.

Arizona has a reputation for being a dry, desert state. While it’s true that southern Arizona cities such as Tucson and Phoenix are known more for hearty tropical foliage, head north to Flagstaff and you’ll find a lush, green landscape dominated by tall evergreens and colorful wildflowers.
