Memorial Day is almost here and with it, the unofficial start of summer! Summer in Flagstaff is a season of sunshine and comfortable temperatures. At Mormon Lake Lodge, we will be celebrating the start of summer the way we have for decades—with a team-roping competition and other western festivities. But these activities aren’t the only reason to come to Flagstaff this summer.
Beautiful Summer Weather
If you are not from around here, the idea of visiting Arizona in the summer probably doesn’t appeal to as you think of scorching heat. But you don’t have to suffer insane warm weather during this time. You can have a reprieve by enjoying cooler temperatures in Flagstaff. Flagstaff is 7,000 feet above sea level and home to one of the larges ponderosa pine forests in existence. This makes summer in Flagstaff a radically different staying in Phoenix or Scottsdale. A Flagstaff summer is filled with high temperatures around 80 degrees and overnight lows that can dip into the 40s.
Outdoor Adventure
These fantastic temperatures, combined with low humidity, make summer in Flagstaff ideal for all kinds of outdoor recreation. The Flagstaff Urban Trails System is comprised of over 50 miles of multi-use recreational trails that are perfect for walking and bicycling. The trails traverse paved sections through neighborhoods, local shopping and a wide variety of natural features. You can also hike or bike through canyons, the Coconino Ponderosa Forest, meadows, and grasslands without ever leaving the trail system.
Although Flagstaff is a semi-dry continental climate, there are local lakes that offer water recreation. Lake Mary in Coconino National forest offers great boating, windsurfing, waterskiing, fishing, and places to picnic.
Small Town Charm
Home to over 65,000 residents, Flagstaff is not a small town, but it still feels like one when you walk around downtown. Historic Route 66 runs in the middle of downtown Flagstaff, hearkening back to an era of cross country road trips and roadside attractions. There are many nostalgic Route 66 buildings in town that you can visit, beginning with the train stations which is now the Flagstaff Visitor Center.
