If your idea of an Arizona summer is blistering triple digit temperatures, you're not alone. But there's more to Arizona than impressive cacti and desert heat. At Mormon Lake Lodge, we enjoy a cooler, greener side of Arizona that many folks simply don’t know about. One of our favorite hidden treasures, Arizona Snowbowl, is located just north of Mormon Lake Lodge in Flagstaff. Although its nearly 800 skiable acres attract visitors in the winter, Snowbowl also offers a wide array of family friendly fun in the summer.
Scenic Chairlift
Head for higher ground with Snowbowl’s Scenic Chairlift. You’ll get a chance to see Arizona from a completely different perspective as the lift takes you up to the tallest point in the state. The summit of Mount Humphreys is 11,500 feet above sea level. From there you can view the jaw-dropping panoramic landscape, ranging from the Sedona red rocks to the walls of the Grand Canyon. The breathtaking views provide fantastic photography opportunities and you might even get to see some wildlife along the mountain face.
Disc Golf
This self-guided course is free to use and includes parts of the 2003 World Disc Championships course. In addition to the challenge of the game itself, this unique course offers obstacles of its own. Players ascend nearly 400 feet in elevation in only a mile and a half before heading back down for the remaining holes. The full course takes two hours or more to complete, but you can choose to play fewer holes for a shorter game with less of a change in altitude. If you do not have a disc of your own, you can rent one inside the Agassiz Lodge.
Hiking
Snowbowl is located in the San Francisco Peaks. A stunning volcanic mountain range, the San Francisco Peaks offer some of the best hiking trails in Arizona. The three marked hiking trails range from 2.5 miles up to 5 miles. All trails include some change in elevation where you can observe the sometimes dramatic shift in flora and fauna that comes with altitude, as well as artifacts and ruins from early inhabitants. When hiking above the timberline, you may have the chance to see one of the endangered San Francisco Peaks groundsel, a small plant with yellow flowers that is not found anywhere else in the world.
